Fear, and craving for food, sex and acquisition are the primary instincts of a living being. The instinctive love of life urges it to hunt for food and satisfy its physical hunger by feeding the body in order to sustain it and live. Food is the first of the primary physical necessities of the living body. Even when considerably advanced and civilized man, recognized the value of spiritual development by the practice of religion, he realized too, that the body was the spiritual medium through which the ultimate goal of human existence, spiritual perfection, liberation or nirvana, could be achieved. Hence not only an ordinary mundane person but even a recluse, who has renounced all possessions and worldly desires and dedicated himself to a life of sacrifice, penance, austerity and asceticism, has to sustain his body and physical faculties by providing the body with necessary sustenance in the form of proper, wholesome, harmless and requisite food and water. The question is what type of food is harmless, wholesome, proper and fit for human consumption?
