SETH JORAWAR MAL

Seth Jorawar Mai had considerable influence in Bikaner, Marwar, Jaisalmer, Udaipur, Indore and other princely states and helped the British Govt, in improving relations with these states. He had great say in the political matters of Indore and got a treaty signed between the British Govt, and ruler of Indore State. He was honoured by the Holker and the British Govt.

While Col. Todd came to Udaipur in 1818 as Political Agent of Mewar he advised Maharana Bhimsingh to invite Seth Jorawar Mai to Udaipur to improve the much deteriorating financial condition of the State. The Maharana accordingly invited him and treated as Guest of Honour. Seth Jorawar Mai established his Kothi at Udaipur, established several villages, arranged financial help to the peasants from the states and got punished the dacoits. Pleased with his services the Maharana much honoured him on May 26, 1827 and also gave Jagir.

The Political Agent appointed him the Treasurer of English Treasury. During the rule of Maharana Sarup Singh the State became indebted to the extent of Rs. 20 lakhs mainly consisting of loans advanced by him. He agreed to the repayment of loans to him as desired by the Maharana. As a result, the other creditors also acted accordingly. This helped the state in improving its financial condition. He earned much fame in the States of Rajasthan. The leading chiefs used to consult him in important political matters. He expired on Feb. 26, 1853. He was accorded a State funeral.
