Deepawali In Jain Perspective

Deepawali is one of the most important festival of Jain Community. It is celebrated on Kartik Krishna Amavasya, when the 24th Tirthankar Bhagwan Mahaveer Swami attained Nirvan in the morning and His Chief Disciple Gautam Gandhar Swami got omniscience in the evening. Bhagwan Mahaveer Swami, who propounded the principle-Live & Let Live, got salvated 2540 years ago from today, so new Veer Nirvan Samvat 2541 will start from Kartik Shukla Ekam, 24th Oct. 2014. On the day of Deepawali, Nirvan Ladoo is offered after performing the Pujan of Bhagwan Mahaveer in the morning in all the Jain Temples throughout India & abroad. While in the evening, Pujans of Gautam Gandhar Swami, Kevalgyan Mahalaxhmi and Saraswati Mata are performed followed by the lightening of Deepakas and decorating them in homes & Jinalayas. According to the principle of Non-violence of Bhagwan Mahaveer swami, fireworks should not be used for celebrating this great festival. The Encyclopedia of Jainism team wish you a Very Happy Diwali and Very Happy New Veer Nirvan Samvat 2541.
