Hair Plucking Ceremony

The Jain Sadhus and Sadhvis after receiving the Diksha (initiation), pluck their hair after every four months in a year. They pluck their hair or they get the hair plucked by others. The hair on face and scalp are plucked. This is called Kesh-lochan or Loch. It is also considered as one kind of austerity where one bears the pain of plucking hair calmly.
This is done mostly in front of the lay-community. First they rub ashes on their head, then they pluck out the hair in bunches. Jains believe that plucking hair teaches them to endure pain. It can be done in private room, but it is done in public with the idea of motivating the people to take the path of renunciation.

GAUTAM GANDHAR SWAMI

GAUTAM GANDHAR SWAMI

(The Chief Disciple of Bhagwan Mahaveer)

Today on Shravan Krishna Ekam, 2571st Veer Shasan Diwas & Gandhar Pad Diwas and on the occassion of the Inauguration of GAUTAM GANDHAR YEAR by the Supreme Jain Sadhvi Pujya Ganini Pramukh Shri Gyanmati Mataji, I present a brief introduction of Gautam Gandhar Swami, the first Chief Disciple of Bhagwan Mahaveer.

  1. Present Jain Philosophy mainly rests on the Divyadhvani or Divine Sermons of the 24th Teerthankar-Bhagwan Mahaveer Swami.
  2. The Divine voice was in the form of `OHM,' which was deciphered by his first Chief disciple-Gautam Gandhar.

Infact, the Divyadhvani of Bhagwan Mahaveer was produced on Shravan Krishna Ekam only after Indrabhuti Gautam came to the Samavsaran, the Divine Sermon Assembly of Bhagwan after 66 days of its formation i.e., the attainment of Omniscience by Bhagwan about 2570 years before from today. As soon as Indrabhuti came to the Samavsaran, he became an ardent disciple of the Lord and accepted Jaineshwari Deeksha.

Three Jewels Of Jainism

Three jewels of Jainism are right faith (Samyak Darshan) , right knowledge (Samyak Gyan) and Right conduct (Samyak Caritra). These three collectively are called as Ratnatraya. Jainas are expected to have Ratnatraya because these together constitute the path of salvation.
Right Faith : Believe in the seven aspects of Reality (Tattvas) as described by Jina or Arihanta is right faith. So, Jainas belive in Supreme Soul- Arihanta and Sidha (Deva) , in their teaching (Sastras) and towards those Munies who practice the teachings of Jaina religion(Gurus) as a cause of right faith . In simple words , right faith is a spiritual awakening of one's self.
Right knowledge : The right knowledge is one by which the person becomes free from attachment and his soul is purified. We can achieve the Right knowledge by strong faith in the teaching of aritantas and through the study of their scriptures.
Right conduct : Withdrawal from the immoral conduct and devoting one's self to the moral conduct is the right faith. Without moral observance, the spiritual practices can not be sustained.
